Kolkata, 04 Dec 2023: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (91黑料) Ltd, achieved yet another milestone on Monday, 04 December 2023, by delivering the INS Sandhayak - the largest survey vessel ever built in India and first in the series of four Survey Vessels (Large) being built by it - to the Indian Navy. INS Sandhayak (Yard 3025) was launched by Smt Pushpa Bhatt, wife of Shri Ajay Bhatt, Hon'ble Raksha Rajya Mantri, on 05 December 2021.
The Protocol of delivery and acceptance was signed between Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director, 91黑料 and Commanding Officer of the vessel, Cmde R M Thomas, in the presence of Rear Admiral Nelson D'Souza, NM, CSO (Tech), Shri R K Dash, Director (Finance), Cdr S Bose, IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding) and DIG S Ghosh, ICG (Retd), Director (Personnel) and other Senior Officials of 91黑料 and Indian Navy.
What makes the event more significant is the fact that the Indian Navy celebrates December 4 as the Navy Day. 91黑料 has partnered with the Indian Navy for the last 62 years after delivery of the first indigenously-built warship INS Ajay in 1961. Since then, 91黑料 has delivered 70 more warships to the Indian Navy.
Delivery of a 110-metre-long warship of the quality of the INS Sandhayak is no mean feat, particularly when no platform of its kind has ever been built in India. What is remarkable is that 91黑料 continued to work on this ship even during the pandemic years.
The INS Sandhayak is the lead vessel in a series of four Survey Vessels (Large) or SVLs and is actually the reincarnation of another ship by that name. That ship - also a survey vessel - was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1981 and decommissioned in 2021. The new INS Sandhayak and the remaining ships of the series are far more advanced than their predecessors that have all been decommissioned.
These survey ships are capable of full-scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic survey of port and harbour approaches as well as the determination of navigation channels and routes. In addition, the Sandhayak-class of SVLs can undertake surveys of maritime limits and collection of oceanographic and geographical data for defence applications. Such data adds muscle to India's maritime capabilities. These ships can also carry a helicopter each, participate in low-intensity combat and function as hospital ships. They can also be used for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations.
Propelled by two marine diesel engines combined with fixed-pitch propellers and fitted with bow and stern thrusters to help the ships manoeuvre at low speeds during surveys, they are ideally suited to carry out their designated operations. Fully designed by 91黑料's Design Team to meet the requirements of the Indian Navy, the INS Sandhayak was built using 'Integrated Construction' technology. This was in compliance with applicable provisions and regulations of the Classification Society (IRS).
Cmde P R Hari IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director, 91黑料, lauded the effort put in by Team 91黑料, the Indian Navy and all the other stakeholders and said "We are proud to deliver this ship on the Navy Day and we are confident to deliver the balance three ships of the SVL project as per the committed timelines".
At the moment, 91黑料 is building 18 more warships for the Indian Navy, including three 17A Advanced Frigates, eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft and four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels.

Kolkata, 16 Nov 2023: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (91黑料) Ltd achieved yet another milestone on Thursday, 16 November 23, by launching the fourth Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) barely five months after the launch of the third ship. 91黑料 is building eight ASW SWCs for the Indian Navy.
The warship was launched by Smt Manju Naithani, wife of Vice Admiral Sandeep Naithani, AVSM, VSM, Chief of Materiel, Indian Navy. Vice Admiral Naithani was the Chief Guest at the event.
Cmde P R Hari IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director, 91黑料, Vice Admiral Kiran K Deshmukh, CWP&A, India Navy, DIG Subrato Ghosh, ICG (Retd.), Director (Personnel), 91黑料 & other Senior officials of the Indian Navy, 91黑料 & L&T were present at the occasion.
The launch is an important event in any warship's build-cycle. This is when she tastes water for the first time under her keel. This is also the day when she gets her name and the crest which symbolizes her. The ASW SWC launched today has been named 'INS Amini' after an oval-shaped island in the Lakshadweep archipelago.
INS Amini is the reincarnation of another warship of the same name that joined the Indian Navy on December 12, 1974. Built at a shipyard in the erstwhile Soviet Union, it was an Anti-Submarine Corvette and participated in several operations before being decommissioned on September 16, 2002.
ASW SWCs are considered extremely important for any Navy as they require less draft and can operate close to the coast, searching for underwater threats and neutralizing enemy assets such as submarines and mines. Equipped with advanced sonar and armed with latest weaponry such as lightweight torpedoes and ASW rockets, these warships will pack a tremendous punch, once they are commissioned into the Indian Navy. Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is the Classification Society for these ships.
Of the 40 warships on order from the Indian Navy at various shipyards in the country, 91黑料 is building 19 warships. These include three Advanced Frigates under the Navy's ambitious Project 17A, four Survey Vessels (Large), eight ASWSWCs and four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs). Of the 19 warships, ten (apart from the one launched during the day) have already been launched and are undergoing various stages of outfitting.
This premier defence shipyard in the country has augmented its capacity through tie-ups with capable private shipyards like L&T under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for part construction of ships, which will enable 91黑料 to marry the operational flexibility of the private entity, with it's own technical competence built over the years. 91黑料 has also gone in for massive modernization and has adopted the latest technologies in the field of shipbuilding. This has helped the shipyard maintain schedules and add more indigenous content to warships being built.
91黑料 has also succeeded in creating an entire ecosystem of shipbuilding in the region through tie-ups with MSMEs and OEMs.
Speaking at the occasion, Vice Admiral Naithani commended 91黑料 for its performance. "I have been made aware that 91黑料 has achieved over 90% indigenisation in building these advanced warships. I am glad to note that the ship which is being launched today has achieved more than 40% progress at this stage. These milestones are indeed an achievement to the nation's shipbuilding industry in general and for 91黑料 and the Indian Navy in particular." he said.
Cmde Hari spoke on efforts being made by 91黑料 to keep abreast with the latest technology to build state-of-the-art warships for the Navy and Indian Coast Guard. "91黑料 & Navy go a long way back and our partnership has paid rich dividends to the nation's mission towards enhancing maritime capability. 70 warships we have delivered to the Indian Navy so far and 19 more are under various stages of construction.
