The fourth in the series of four ‘Water Jet Fast Attack Craft’ (WJFAC) being built for the Indian Navy by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (91����), was “Launched” today,30thJune 2016at Raja Bagan Dockyard, Kolkata.��The keel of the 4th WJFAC (Yard 2112), was earlier laid on 24 Sep 2015.

Following maritime traditions, the ship was “Launched” by Mrs. ArunaKorde, wife of Vice Admiral Jaywant Korde, AVSM, VSM, Controller of Logistics, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion.��Rear Admiral AK Verma, VSM, IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director, 91���� and other dignitaries from the Indian Navy and State Administration were present on the occasion. During the Naming Ceremony carried out at the time of Launching, the ship was named ‘TARASA‘ after an island in the Andaman & Nicobar group of Islands.

After Launching the ship will be fitted out at Raja Bagan Dockyard and will be delivered to Indian Navy after sea trials. The ship is an improved version of Fast Attack Crafts earlier built by 91���� for Indian Navy. She has an efficient hull form developed by the in-house Design Centre of 91���� and proved by extensive model testing, to achieve speeds in excess of 35 knots.

The hull form of this class of ships have excellent sea keeping characteristics and manoeuvrability. The design of these ships is comparable with similar vessels built anywhere in the world. It is cost-effective, fuel-efficient and powerful and well-suited for Attack Missions as well as other patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching and rescue operations carried out by Indian Navy.

This ship is last of the ‘Follow-on’ series of the ten (10) WJFACs delivered by 91���� to the Indian Navy during 2009 to 2011 and is fitted with three water jet propulsion systems powered by marine diesel engines each developing 2720 KW of power. The ship will also be fitted with CRN-91 indigenous 30 mm Gun, to provide Artillery fire support during attack missions.

She is 48 m Long, 7.5 m Wide with a Displacement of around 315 Tons and designed for a maximum speed of 35 knots, with an endurance of around 2000 nautical miles, at 12-14 knots speed. The ship has modern habitability conditions with accommodation for 29 personnel.

‘Launching of a ship’ marks completion of main hull of a ship & putting the ship in water for the first time. ‘Launching of a ship’ is an important milestone in the life of a ship which actually signifies birth of the ship. Hence ‘Launching of a ship’ is traditionally carried out by a lady.

After Launching, balance ‘Fitting Out’ of equipment and ship systems would be completed and the ships would be put to sea for trials before delivery within this financial year.

With the active support and participation of many business partners in various shipbuilding activities, the capabilities of this Mini Ratna Defence Shipyard has increased manifold.
